In addition to providing facilities to independent research fellows, the Institute coordinates projects of wider scope in collaboration with universities, museums and other institutions.

In this way Italian paintings and old master drawings in Dutch public collections are made accessible through a number of exhibition catalogues and scholarly publications.

The Institute's research programme on Italian art covers the following areas of interest:
  • Art patronage in Tuscany 1300-1600
  • The organization of the Renaissance artist's workshop
  • The history of drawing and printmaking
  • Church decoration and ornament in Venice
  • Caravaggism in Tuscany and Northern Italy
  • Urbanism, architecture and the visual arts in Florence 1737-1914
