INTERNATIONAL DATABASE OF WATERMARKS AND PAPER USED FOR PRINTS AND DRAWINGS c. 1450-1800
Go to the Watermark Database
In 2001 the Dutch University Institute for Art History embarked on a project to record, digitize, and study both watermarks and the structure of paper used for prints and drawings as well as artists' letters. In support of the scholarly and scientific goals, a new database was recently developed with the financial support of the I Cinquecento Foundation, the Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research, the K.F. Hein Fonds and the Utrecht Universiteitsfonds.

You can test and assess the functionality of the prototype and pass on to us suggestions for its improvement and for the new watermark classification standard. At this stage, we are still flexible enough to be able to make changes and accommodate special requests.

Those who have already studied or collected homogeneous groups of watermarks and paper of individual artists or groups of artists are invited to send us their data and photographic material (watermarks/paper on scale 1:1) for inclusion into the database.
