The Dutch Institute for Art History in Florence is in the process of cataloguing over 10.000 Dutch and Flemish paintings in Italian Public Collections. Many of these are outstanding works of art, little known to both the public and the art specialist. The aim of this research project is to bring to light this huge amount of material scattered in various collections all over Italy.The results will be published in a series of eight volumes, each richly illustrated, offering thorough documentation, new insights and revised attributions.
The series will be divided into regions Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto-Friuli, Liguria, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany and Sardinia, Rome-Lazio-The Marches-Umbria, Southern Italy and Sicily.
The first volume is dedicated to the 441 paintings in Liguria and comprises works by more than one hundred artists, among them Gerard David, Hans Memling, Jan van Scorel, Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. A certain number of these paintings were produced for Genoese merchants and the aristocracy.
